When it comes to looking after your skin in winter and beyond, one of the hero ingredients to introduce into your skincare regime is retinol. In this post, we’ll go behind the curtain and explore how retinol can supercharge your skin, and which product we recommend for doing just that.
Retinol explained
First, it helps to know what retinol is and understand its many benefits. A type of vitamin A, retinol is an anti-ageing ingredient that plays a key role in skin rejuvenation, while helping enhance its appearance. Here’s how it works:
– Speeds up cell turnover, to reveal smoother, younger skin below
– Rejuvenates the skin, reducing lines and discolouration
– Helps aid the skin’s natural protecting abilities
– Has antioxidant benefits, which help neutralise free radicals (a type of molecule which can damage cells and cause ageing)
In winter, our skin can be more susceptible to dryness and peeling, which retinol can help combat thanks to its skin-renewing properties. It can also help repair the skin’s natural barrier and ensure it stays hydrated and supple.
Introducing AlumierMD Resurfacing Serum 0.25
At Skinesse, your Buckinghamshire aesthetics clinic, we favour medical grade skincare for our patients, creating lasting results through powerful, proven formulas that are backed by science and research. One of our recommendations for retinol is from one of the leading brands in the industry, AlumierMD.
The AlumierMD Resurfacing Serum 0.25 dramatically improves signs of ageing such as lines & wrinkles, skin tone & blemishes, and even skin texture, over time. It’s made with microencapsulated retinol, a process which stores tiny particles of retinol inside a shell, helping control its release over a timed period. In other words, when you use it as part of your nightly skincare regime, the active retinol is slowly released overnight to maximise its effects.
As well as powerful retinol, the serum also contains soothing, comforting and hydrating ingredients, which when combined, make the perfect recipe for combatting that harsh winter weather and give skin a bit of a boost while getting to work on ageing concerns. Ingredients include:
* Hyaluronic acid – this moisturiser boosts skin elasticity
* Niacinamide – this B vitamin and antioxidant reduces signs of skin ageing
* Honey – this moisturising, soothing ingredient comes direct from nature
Best of all, the formula is cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and free of dyes, parabens, sulfates and phthalates (chemicals which are thought to be harmful to the body), so you know you’re being kind to your skin and using an ethical product at the same time.
Quick Questions
Read on for some answers to commonly asked questions about AlumierMD’s retinol serum, as well as handy tips for skincare in the winter.
What does the strength refer to?
We often refer to retinol as a ‘buildable’ ingredient, meaning that you can start with products containing a low quantity, and gradually progress to a higher strength over time. Our AlumierMD Retinol has strength of 0.25, but in time, you can progress to the 0.5 and 1.0 strengths.
Are there side-effects of using retinol?
You may experience light peeling, dryness and redness of the skin when you first use retinol, often referred to in the industry as the ‘retinisation period’. However, this should pass as your skin adjusts, and the benefits usually outweigh any passing discomfort.
When will I see results?
Many of our patients enjoy results in a matter of weeks, though it could take a few months to see true skin benefits. It does vary between patients and depending on factors such as your age and skin type.
What else can I try for my skin?
We always recommend wearing daily sun protection to guard against photoageing (sun damage, such as uneven tone & texture, lines & wrinkles, and thread veins). Wearing sun protection is one of the easiest ways to keep your skin looking and feeling youthful.
We also recommend using a moisturiser along with our AlumierMD retinol serum. This can help offset any dryness or redness you may experience at the start of your treatment programme. Our experts will be happy to personally recommend an appropriate product for your skin.
